Alan Rogers Review of Oberhof Camping
Beside a lake, at an altitude of 700 metres and quietly hidden in the middle of the Thüringer forest, Oberhof Camping has seen many changes since the departure of its former owners, the East German secret police. There are 150 touring pitches, all with electricity (10A Europlug), 20 with water and drainage. From this fairly open site there are views of the surrounding forests and of the lake, which is bordered by wide grass areas ideal for a picnic or for just lazing around and enjoying the view. The site is very quiet and has direct access to marked routes for rambling and cycling in the forest. Nine small cottages are also available to rent on site.
The winter ski resort of Oberhof is within easy reach, being only 5 km. away, as are many interesting places such as Weimar and Erfurt. Close to Erfurt, perched on the top of a cliff and a must to visit, is the Wartburg. It is here, whilst in hiding, that Martin Luther completed the translation of the New Testament into German (1522).
