Alan Rogers Review

Máré Vára takes its name from an ancient castle situated on top of a hill, two kilometres away, where the German noble family of Mariën once lived. The site is on archaeological ground: where the main house now stands, there used to be a monastery and centuries before that there was an ancient Roman settlement. Some 40 pitches (36 with 10A electricity) are on slightly sloping, well kept fields. On site is a small swimming pool (7x3 m). Modern toilet facilities are in an old barn and here in the walls one can see remains of the former monastery.

All the facilities were clean and tidy when we were there. Máré Vára is a good base from which to explore this relatively unknown part of Hungary and is only 20 minutes by bus from the interesting historic town of Pécs, named Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010.
