Alan Rogers Review
A secluded, rural location, deep in the heart of the Peak District, Longnor Wood is an adult only park (over 18 yrs) and an ideal environment for a relaxing break from the outside world. It is a good base for walking, red deer and birdwatching (barn owls) and serious cycling – the area is very hilly. There are just 14 touring pitches plus an additional 13 pitches for tents. The pitches are level, some on small terraces, all with 10A electricity hook-ups on half hardstanding, half grass. Three are multi-services (electricity, water, waste water and TV connections). Sharing the site are 33 seasonal pitches and nine caravan holiday homes to rent.
The tenting area is at the top of the site, with wonderful views over the National Park, but you may have a problem with tent pegs as the topsoil can be rather thin in places. There is a well appointed late arrivals area at the entrance. The approach road is narrow with passing places. Reception has a brochure with the history of the old market town of Longnor (where Peak Practice was filmed), which includes several places worth visiting.
The single heated building has modern facilities and includes cubicles with a toilet, washbasin and spacious showers. Freezer for ice packs and a microwave oven (donations to charity). Laundry facilities. Reception includes a small shop supplying basic requirements. Gas supplies. Putting green, badminton and boules courts. Dogs accepted, max. 2 per unit. RVs accepted by appointment. WiFi throughout (charged).
Longnor village is 6 miles south of Buxton. At crossroads in village square, turn west. Take left turn after 1.25 miles, then immediately right. Also signed from A53 between Leek and Buxton, turning east towards Longnor near Winking Man pub and turning right. N.B. When using sat nav, do not approach from south using postcode.Link to campsite location map on google
