Alan Rogers Review of Leadstone Camping

Leadstone provides traditional camping at its best in a series of hedged grass fields, sloping in parts, in a natural, secluded bowl. In a designed Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Blue Flag beach and sand dunes of Dawlish Warren are only a half mile walk. The area can get somewhat frenzied in peak holiday times but Leadstone provides a haven of peace and tranquillity. Owned by the same family since 1974, the Leadstone welcome is personal and the site totally relaxed. In all, there are 137 pitches, 75 for touring, with 16A electricity. A regular bus service passes the gate every 15 minutes.

An impressive timber-clad building houses showers, toilets, a dishwashing room and launderette facilities. It is sympathetically designed in keeping with the site’s location on the seaward side of the Warren road where it is subject to Coastal Preservation regulations. The provision is good, if somewhat short on toilets. Extra toilet pods are brought in for peak times. The site is only open for a short season but is popular and well run. Dawlish Warren is renowned for its good weather and average temperatures of over 70 degrees are not uncommon.
