Alan Rogers Review of Château Camping la Grange Fort
This tranquil campsite of seven hectares is within the 25-hectare estate of the picturesque 15th-century Château of Grange Fort. There are 163 pitches (119 for touring units) some with panoramic views over the River Allier, others with views of the historic château. There is a mix of well-drained grass and hardstanding pitches with varying degrees of shade. A short, steep path leads down to the river. Guided tours of the château are available and high-quality evening meals are provided in its vaulted restaurant. The campsite is just ten minutes from the A75.
The old stable buildings have been sympathetically converted into a cosy bar and TV room. A small indoor pool and sauna are available all season and a larger outdoor pool, by the walls of the château, is open during July and August. Fishing and swimming are possible in the river Allier, accessible from the campsite. Being situated on the château estate, many interesting birds, butterflies and plants can be found. Family canoe and picnic expeditions can be arranged on the river or perhaps a rough rafting tour of the Allier canyon for the more adventurous. This campsite makes a good base from which to tour the nearby ancient volcanic area or spend a day shopping in historic Clermont-Ferrand.
