Alan Rogers Review of Cartref Caravan & Camping
Cartref Caravan and Camping is an adults-only touring and glamping site located in the peaceful hamlet of Ford Heath, just under 5 miles (around a 10-minute drive) west of the historic market town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Renowned for its tranquillity, wildlife-friendly initiatives, and immaculate grounds, Cartref—which translates to "home" in Welsh—is run by local owners and serves as an ideal base for exploring Shropshire and the Welsh borders.
The site features approximately 40 touring pitches, each enclosed on three sides by mature, native hedgerows (such as beech, hawthorn, and rose) to optimise guest privacy and create natural corridors for local wildlife. All pitches include 16-amp electric hookups (metered).
A standout feature of the site is its rustic, unique onsite bar and lounge area. It features a massive central log burner for cooler months and an outdoor seating area for the summer. The reception desk features friendly staff who provide local tourist information and stock Calor Gas and minor caravan accessories. It features a small shop selling daily essentials and locally sourced produce—including honey harvested from the campsite's own beehives.
Cartref is highly dog-friendly, allowing up to three dogs per pitch. It features a safe, enclosed, off-lead meadow exercise area so dogs can stretch their legs freely, and well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome inside the onsite bar. The site holds a Platinum Bellamy Award for its environmental practices. It features a dedicated wildlife zone at the far end of the site, a re-planted meadow with rare plant species, and a carefully managed wildlife pond that attracts local birds, ducks, and great crested newts. Because of its rural location and low light pollution, it is also a fantastic spot for stargazing.
Due to its secluded countryside setting, having your own vehicle is highly recommended. The nearest bus stops (with routes to Shrewsbury or Welshpool) are roughly a 20-to-30-minute walk down country lanes.
