Alan Rogers Review
Camping Val d’Or is one of those small, family run, countryside sites where you easily find yourself staying longer than planned. Set in lush meadowland under a scattering of trees, the site is divided into two by the tree-lined Clerve river as it winds its way slowly through the site. A footbridge goes some way to joining the site together and there are two entrances for vehicles. There are plenty of cycle routes and hiking trails to explore in this rural region.
There are 76 marked, level grass touring pitches, mostly 100 square metres, all with electricity (6A Europlug) and with some tree shade. Some are adjacent to the river. Cars are parked away from the pitches which leaves more room and a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere among the pitches. There are open views of the surrounding countryside with its wooded hills. The site’s Dutch owners speak good English and are happy to give advice and local tips.
The friendly bar is a popular meeting point. Children have three playgrounds, two conventional and the third, beside the river, is a water playground with pump, various waterways, waterwheel and a small pool. The site participates in the Wanderhütten scheme providing wooden huts for rent to hikers. A local railway passes the site but it is not obtrusive and there are no night passenger services.
Facilities
Next to the reception is a heated sanitary block where some facilities are found, others including some showers are located under cover, outside. Showers are token operated. Laundry room. Gas supplies. Bar (all day in high season). Takeaway (high season except Sundays). Swimming and paddling in river. Three play areas (one with waterways, waterwheel and small pool). Bicycle hire. WiFi (free). Max. 1 dog.
