Alan Rogers Review of Camping Esponellà
This large campsite has a lovely setting alongside a slow-flowing river against a backdrop of stunning cliffs and tree-covered slopes. 240 small to medium-sized pitches are scattered amongst the trees, 140 for touring, all with 5A electricity. Many are fully serviced (water, drainage and electricity).
The older part of the campsite houses a well-stocked shop and a bar/restaurant adjacent to the swimming pools. A small stream runs along the lower side, which can be seen from the pool and restaurant area, which faces the swimming pool complex, which acts as the main hub. This is a peaceful, rural area north of Girona, with excellent walking and cycling opportunities and just 30 km from the wonderful beaches of the Costa Brava.
The main pool is heated and open all year, as are the smaller pools which can be fully covered and heated to 30 degrees. There are two communal barbecue areas, including a newly built one near the restaurant (no barbecues are allowed on pitches). There are 15 chalets for hire. Very popular with Spanish campers who keep their caravans with large awnings here (so looks rather untidy around the middle pitches), the site is on the edge of the village, which has a shop, bar and restaurant.
Facilities at Camping Esponellà
Two old toilet blocks, a smaller one with only toilets and washbasins near the rental accommodation and a newer one at the front part of the site. Some washbasins with only cold water. Small shop (Easter-Sept). An attractive restaurant with a terrace, serving traditional Mediterranean cuisine, adjacent bar and takeaway (all year). Three heated swimming pools (all year). Play area. Boules. Minigolf. Tennis. Children’s activities. Small disco. Fishing, swimming and kayaking in the river. Bicycle and kayak hire. Free WiFi in the bar area. Communal barbecue area (not allowed on pitches).
Directions to Camping Esponellà
Esponellà is 20 km. southwest of Figueres. From the N260 Figueres-Olot road, 4 km. west of Navata turn south on Gip512 to Esponellà. After factory on left, cross river and on left-hand bend turn sharp right to site (yellow sign) along a 200 m. single-track dusty road. Turn right at site sign, and site in on left in 100 m.
