Alan Rogers Review
Le Val Saint-Jean is set beside a lake in the heart of the department of Cantal. The campsite has 92 generously sized, slightly sloping, touring pitches (with 10A electricity), many with good views. They are arranged in small groups separated by shrubs and small trees, giving open spaces for children to play. The site is organised to give some privacy and you are never far from a sanitary block. Most of the activities are situated by the lake where you can use all the facilities of the leisure club (high season) including cycling, canoeing, kayaking and pedaloes. This less well-known region is well worth exploring and the local gastronomy can be experienced in the village of Mauriac with its attractive architecture typical of the area. The campsite, on the outskirts of the 2,000-year-old village of Mauriac, has recently returned to municipal ownership and benefits from the use of the adjacent swimming pool complex.
Some pitches have views over Mauriac others over the golf course. The larger town of Salers, one of the most beautiful French towns, is 20 km. The well known Salers cattle are distinctive with their mahogany-coloured coats and pale coloured lyre shaped horns The Salers cheese is of high quality and available throughout the region. Information on organised walks in the Corrèze countryside can be obtained from reception. Although close to Mauriac a variety of interesting birds can be seen including woodpeckers and the hoopoe.
Facilities
The two toilet blocks are well equipped with hot water throughout, providing some washbasins in cabins. Some facilities for visitors with disabilities. Limited shop. Bar, snack bar and restaurant (all May-Sept). Play area and playing field. Activities organised for children in July/Aug.
