The village of Reckingen is about halfway between Brig and the Furka/Grimsel passes. You can still get the train with a car and caravan, or a motorhome, from Oberwald to Andermatt to avoid the steep climbs and descents of the Furka Pass, but in doing so you will miss some exhilarating and unforgettable scenery. This family run site, at 1,326 m. provides 100 level pitches for touring units, all with 10A electricity. There is a little shade. Water points are equipped with long hoses. It provides an excellent base for walking, climbing or cycling as well as rafting on the Rhône in the summer or skiing in the winter.
Riverside pitches are in great demand, with uninterrupted views of the surrounding forested hills and mountains. Alpine bells can be heard as the cattle graze on the lush hillsides, and a stroll along the lane at 17.30 will see them descend to be milked in the field. Walk up into the village and marvel at the ancient wooden buildings and take a breathtaking visit to the church, whose door is usually open.
Facilities at Camping Augenstern
The toilet block has recently been refitted to the highest standards. Showers on payment. Washing machine and dryer. Motorhome services. No facilities for campers with disabilities, due to restricted access. Shop for essentials (July/Aug). Restaurant/bar with satellite TV. Play area with inflatable pool in season. WiFi throughout (charged, but free near reception).
Directions to Camping Augenstern
From the no. 19 road turn south in Reckingen next to church. Go down hill, along one-way street, carefully over railway and covered bridge. Over next bridge and follow the lane past the swimming pool to the site entrance.
