Alan Rogers Review of Oban Camping & Caravanning Club Site
Oban Camping and Caravanning Club site at Barcaldine by Connel is 12 miles north of Oban. This small, intimate site has 75 grass and hardstanding pitches, 52 with electrical hook-ups (16A), arranged within the old walled garden of Barcaldine House. The site therefore has some protection from the wind which makes it quite a sun trap (can be wet underfoot in bad weather). Being a small site, it has a very cosy feel to it, due no doubt to the friendly welcome given to new arrivals. Opposite the campsite is a marina with a little beach you can walk along. There’s a sandy beach at nearby Benderloch and the wonderful family friendly Ben Lora cafe and bookshop comes highly recommended. Take the path opposite up to the summit of Beinn Lora and you'll be rewarded with fantastic views across to Mull.
The loch across the road is handy for sea fishing and a 20 minute walk takes you to a freshwater lake for fishing. Through the garden gate, one is immediately in the Barcaldine forest with its miles of forest tracks, absolutely perfect for both dog walking and mountain biking. Oban, known as the seafood capital of Scotland, is 13 miles to the south of the campsite. The town is renowned for the variety and quality of seafood landed in the harbour, not surprising there are numerous great seafood restaurants in and around the town centre. Oban also boasts its own malt whisky distillery and several local micro-breweries. You can take a ferry from Oban to the Western Isles, or visit Dunollie Museum and Castle and the Oban War and Peace Museum.
