Alan Rogers Review of Camping Los Escullos
This efficient, well maintained medium-sized site has 185 pitches (60-80 sq.m). They are divided by hedges and trees, 100 have 10A electricity and some have artificial shading. Specific taps about the grounds provide drinking water. The pool has an overlooking bar and restaurant which is kept busy serving excellent typical Spanish ‘menu del dia’ food at reasonable prices. It is a popular site with British tourists seeking the sun. The salinas on the approach to Cabo de Gata are famous for birdlife (including flocks of pink flamingos).
Inland, the whitewashed village of Nijar is renowned for rugs and basketweave products. Crossing the Sierra Alhamilla mountain range is the Tabernas desert with its castle and nearby Mini Hollywood (plus zoo), the location of Clint Eastwood’s spaghetti westerns. The drive along and towards the coast here is unattractive due to the vast number of huge plastic greenhouses used by the agricultural community. Nearing the coast and as you enter the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata, the scenery changes dramatically, with some areas unspoilt.

The main sanitary block is large and rather old, but clean and fully equipped with hot showers and accessible facilities. A second newer block is close to reception. Fridge hire. Well stocked small supermarket. Bar/restaurant. Takeaway. Large outdoor pool (all year) and jacuzzi (High season). Hairdresser. Massage. Well equipped gym. Internet access. Multisports court. Scuba diving. TV room. Bicycle hire. No charcoal barbecues. Entertainment programme in high season. WiFi (free).
Directions to Camping Los Escullos
From A7/E15 autovia exit at either exit 479 or 471 towards San Jose. On approach to San Jose left turn toward Los Escullos. Site is well signed.
