In the heart of the Champagne region, Camping de la Forêt is in a rural setting on the edge of woodland and just a few metres from the Lac du Der-Chantecoq, described as Europe’s largest artificial lake. There are 100 touring pitches off uneven gravel roadways, offering a choice of shaded or more open locations; electricity connections (10/16A) are available. A further ten pitches are occupied on a permanent basis and fifteen by chalets for hire. The nearby sandy beach offers supervised swimming and a playground, whilst a little further down the lake is a sailing school. Walking and cycling tracks follow the 38 km. circumference of the lake.

Energetic cyclists can use tracks to the towns of Saint-Dizier and Vitry-le-François. The lake is the site of the Réserve Nationale de Chasse et de Faune Sauvage and a museum tells the story of the creation of the Lac du Der and gives a good insight into the area’s natural history and traditions. The nearby village of Arrigny has a bar and restaurant and a few shops including a bakery and grocer’s store, but the nearest supermarket, filling station and banks are in Vitry-le-François. The Champagne vineyards and cellars are popular destinations for visitors.

Directions to Camping de la Forêt

Arrigny is 53 km. south-east of Chalôns-en-Champagne. From A26 (Reims/Troyes) motorway, leave at exit 20 (Sommesous) and take N4 to Vitry- le-François; before town, turn south on D2 and by-pass town following signs to Lac du Der (D14/D396). At roundabout take D13 south-east for 16 km. through village to lake and campsite on left.
