Alan Rogers Review of Camping Val d’Aleth

In the Cathar country of the upper Aude valley and open all year round, this popular small site is run by Christopher and Christine Cranmer who offer a warm welcome. The mellow, medieval walls of Alet-les-Bains form one boundary of the site, while on the other and popular with anglers is the River Aude (fenced for safety). Beyond this is the D118 and a railway which produces noise at times. The 37 mainly small, numbered pitches, around half of which are on hardstandings, all have electricity hook-ups (4-10A) and are separated by hedges and mature trees which give shade. Try the local sparkling wine, Blanquette de Limoux, said to be the first Champagne.

Medieval Alet is a spa town with a thermal pool that provides the town’s drinking water. It is here that the French ‘take the cure’. The past life of the old city can be traced through its narrow streets, interesting buildings and the remains of an abbey and cathedral. The town has all services, including three restaurants and a Casino (a remnant of old aristocratic days). The site owners are keen to assist, with books, guides and walking maps available on loan along with brochures (in English) of attractions in the area. Bed and breakfast is also available.
