It would be difficult to find a more beautiful lake than Orta, surrounded by wooded hills and mountains and fringed with ancient towns and villages. Camping Royal, family owned and run, sits on a hillside overlooking the lake. There are 60 pitches, 20 for touring, set on level terraces, each with 5A Europlug and a water point nearby. Although professionally managed, this site has maintained the typical relaxed informality for which Italy is famous. Popular with campers from all over Europe, many return year after year. Nothing seems to be too much trouble to ensure a memorable stay.

A new pool was installed in 2014, which will make this site even better for family holidays, but there may be noise in high season. At other times, those seeking a relaxing holiday will enjoy sitting out overlooking the lake. The shop and bar are well stocked and a village restaurant is 100 m. away. Bigger shopping will need a trip to Omegna. In season, the site runs a shuttle service (€ 2 return) to Orta San Giulio, whose history goes back to the 7th century. The monastery and basilica on the Isola San Giulio should not be missed. Rates are very attractive, especially off peak.

Refurbished toilet block has hot showers (20c tokens) and a mixture of British and squat style toilets. New wet room with accessible facilities by reception. Washing machine and dryer. Laundry and dishwashing sinks. Fridges. Shop with takeaway pizzas. Bar. New swimming pool. Playground. Football field. Room with games, library, cooking hobs and TV. Children’s activities (daily in July/August) and some entertainment for adults. Shuttle bus to San Giulio in season (€2 return). Bicycle, scooter and car hire arranged. Internet cabin. WiFi (charged).

Directions to Camping Royal

From A26 Autostrada, take SP229 and follow signs to Lake Orta. This road continues along eastern shore of lake to Pettenasco. Opposite church on left, turn right signed Camping Royal. Some sat navs miss this turn. Do not go past Pettenasco, as back road to site is extremely narrow with sharp bends. From the north, drive into village and turn left opposite church. Road up to site is steep and needs care (unsuitable for units over 7 m).
