Alan Rogers Review of Camping Lido Mappo
Lido Mappo lies on the lakeside at the northeast tip of Lake Maggiore, about 5 km. from Locarno, and has views of the surrounding mountains and hills across the lake. The site is attractively laid out in rows of individual, numbered pitches, mostly demarcated by access roads or hedges. Mature trees provide plenty of shade. The pitches (357 for touring) are occupied by a mixture of tents, caravans and motorhomes; they vary in size, those by the lake cost more and must be booked by the week. Electricity (10-16A Europlug; long leads useful) is available on all pitches. With helpful, English-speaking staff, this is a quiet site with its own narrow, mainly sandy beach.
The well equipped playground is deliberately placed at the top of the site so as not to disturb others. Boats can be brought and left on the shore or at moorings; a slipway and a jetty have been constructed for these. A wide variety of trips can be made from here by car, lake steamer or mountain lift. Although reservations are only made for longer stays, there is always a fair chance of finding a vacant place.
Facilities at Camping Lido Mappo
The five recently renovated toilet blocks are well placed throughout the site with good access and accessible facilities. They include individual washbasins, all in cabins for women and some for men. Baby changing area. Washing machines and dryers. Cooking facilities and communal barbecue. Refrigerated compartments for hire. Motorhome services. Excellent supermarket. Restaurant/bar. Takeaway. TV room. Large playground. Volleyball. Lake swimming. Fishing. First aid post. Dogs are not accepted. Internet room and WiFi (free).
Directions to Camping Lido Mappo
On Bellinzona-Locarno road 13, exit Tenero. Site is signed at Co-op roundabout. From Locarno, enter Tenero and follow signs. There are several campsites, so watch for the names.
