Alan Rogers Review of Camping le Petit Bois
With views across the Auvergne countryside, this pleasant site on the edge of a small traditional French village is a comfortable and convenient break in your journey when using the A75 motorway. The interesting village has a bar and a small restaurant serving inexpensive meals. There are 90 touring pitches, all with electricity (6A), 20 also have water and drainage. Some are level with views over the village, some on the hilltop among trees and others on sloping, grassy land with panoramic views of the Monts du Cantal and the distant volcanic mountains.
Nearby is the Viaduc de Garabit, built by Gustave Eiffel using techniques he later employed in the construction of the Eiffel Tower. Mont Mouchet is a moving memorial to the 4,000 members of the Maquis who died fighting for their country’s freedom in the Second World War. The historic town of Saint-Flour also offers a choice of shops, bars and restaurants. Opportunities for walking, cycling and climbing are plentiful, while motorists will find a number of signposted routes including one starting in Ruynes and exploring the little-known villages and countryside of La Margeride.

The main central heated toilet block has preset showers, washbasins in cabins, toilets for children and excellent en-suite accessible units (although building is on a hill, so access may not be easy). Baby bath can be borrowed and used in accessible unit. Washing machines. Motorhome services. Play areas. Children’s club twice weekly plus weekly family entertainment evening (July/Aug). TV room with table tennis table. Pétanque. Mobile homes and wooden huts to rent. WiFi (free).
