Yes, the Christmas films will soon be doing the rounds, and there’s much to plan and get excited about over the festive period. However, this time of year is perfect for a camping retreat both at home and abroad. 

Whether you’re into winter sports such as skiing, ice climbing and rambling or would prefer wrapping up warm for a guided tour of beautiful scenery and culture, winter camping offers a wealth of opportunities.

Camping Jungfrau
This friendly and ever-popular site has a very imposing and dramatic situation in a steep valley with a fine view of the Jungfrau at the end. Mountain meltwater cascades hundreds of feet down the sheer rock walls of the valley. Many active pursuits are available in the area, as well as trips on the Jungfrau railway and mountain lifts. In winter, the site runs a free shuttle bus to the local ski lifts, and large community lounges are available for après-ski enjoyment.

Camping Alpenblick
Alpenblick is an all-year site in a stunning setting, located at the heart of the Bernese Oberland just 100 metres from the beautiful Lake Thun. A Swiss chalet-style building houses the reception, shop and bar/restaurant that is very popular with campers and locals alike (try the ‘schnitzelbrot’ and dine on the terrace in good weather). There are around 100 touring pitches and a further 80 residential pitches. The touring pitches are mostly grassy and level, with moderate shade, and all have 10/16A electrical connections. Some good hardstanding pitches are available for motorhomes.

Camping Manor Farm 1
Manor Farm continues to be popular with British and Dutch visitors; located in one of the traditional touring areas of Switzerland. The flat terrain is divided into 230 individual, numbered pitches, varying considerably in size (40-100 sq.m) and price. There is shade in some places.

In a quiet location arranged around two lakes and set amidst beautiful alpine scenery, this site, founded in 1930, is renowned as one of Austria’s top sites. Over the last few years, many improvements have been carried out, and pride of place goes to the innovative, award-winning, multifunctional building at the entrance to the site. This contains all the sanitary facilities expected of a top site, including a special section for children, private bathrooms to rent, and a dog bath.
Camping Grubhof
Camping Grubhof is a beautifully laid out, level and spacious site set in the former riding and hunting park of the 14th-century Schloss Grubhof. The 250 touring pitches have been carefully divided into separate areas for different types of visitors – dog owners, young people, families and groups, and a quiet area. All the generous XXL pitches (at least 180 sq.m) provide electricity (16A), water and drainage (also in winter), many along the bank of the Saalach River.

Camping Mittagsspitze is attractively and quietly situated for visiting Liechtenstein. Set on a hillside, it has all the scenic mountain views one could wish for. Extensive grassy terraces on a steep slope provide unmarked but level pitches, and electricity connections (6A) are available. Trees provide some shade, mainly along the terrace edges. About 80 touring pitches are available, with the remainder of the site given over to seasonal pitches.

Camping Larrouleta is an all year site located at the heart of the Basque country. The site has been developed around a 2.5 hectare lake which has a sandy beach and is ideal for fishing. On-site amenities include a swimming pool, covered in low season. There is also a bar/restaurant specialised in local cuisine and where occasional Basque folk evenings are held in high season. The 327 touring pitches are of a good size. Choose between the standard (80m²) with electricity (5A), or a number of ‘Grand Confort’ pitches are available (about 100m²) with 10A electricity, water and drainage.

The Sandringham Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Site
Sandringham Caravan and Motorhome Club site is in a delightfully secluded spot, within the grounds of the Royal Estate in Norfolk. Visitors will love the tranquillity offered by this woodland site where pitches are set in a clearing among trees. Away from the site, nature and RSPB reserves, as well as sandy beaches including Hunstanton and Brancaster will keep all family members entertained. Sandringham House is the most famous residence of the Royal Family, it is usually closed during the Queen's holiday (end of July and beginning of August), but during the remaining months between Easter and October, the House, Museum and grounds are fully open to visitors, as is the Country Park. Flower Show-June, Game & Country Fair-September, Christmas Craft Fair-November. Many woodland paths on the estate to explore. The site has 138 pitches all with electricity 16amp.
