This really is rural Portugal. Set in rolling countryside in a working olive grove, Os Anjos (The Angels) is an ideal spot from which to explore this lesser-known corner of the Alentejo. The white fortified town of Campo Maior is within walking distance, and the historic city of Elvas, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short drive away.

Solange and Joris will provide a warm welcome and as much advice as you need on where to go on foot, by bike or by car, with appropriate route sheets. The site has 30 terraced pitches accessed by a circular track, with twelve electrical connections (6A) available.

The Spanish border is very close and a trip to Badajoz on the River Guadiana is highly recommended; it is a modern market town with a fascinating past, so you can catch a morning market, visit the Moorish castle – the Alcazaba – and some of its many other monuments, gardens and bridges, and then stock up with Spanish provisions and fuel from a hypermarket. Back in Portugal, you can head north to explore the spectacular Serra de São Mamede National Park and visit the impressive medieval castle and town of Marvão, or Portalegre, another hill-top town famous for its silks and tapesteries.

The central toilet block has preset showers, some washbasins in cubicles with hot and cold water, and an accessible unit(which is heated and available to all in winter). Note: the terrain generally might cause problems for wheelchair users. Small bar with seating on the terrace and in the reception lounge. Pleasant little swimming pool with an attractively equipped terrace. Boules. Bicycle hire. Barbecue evening on Fridays (BYO meat). WiFi throughout (charged).

Directions to Camping Rural Os Anjos

Campo Maior is 100 km northeast of Evora. From A6/IP7 at Elvas leave at exit 11 and take N373 to Campo Maior. Then turn southeast following blue signs for ‘Parque de Campismo Rural’. Site is on left in 1.5 km. From Spain via A5 at Badajoz, join A6 to exit 11 then as above.
