Anyone who likes a simple, well-run campsite in the depths of the countryside will love Quinta Valbom. Surrounded by wooded slopes with mountains in the distance, the site has been created from a deserted wine-producing farmstead by its enthusiastic Dutch owners, Els and Herman. It is primarily a place for campers; of the 30 pitches, 20 are for campers. All pitches 10A electricity available, on several terraces reached by a steep cobbled road. Those on the upper terraces are suitable only for tents. There is space for nine caravans (maximum length 6 m) and one motorhome on the lower terraces (Herman will meet caravanners and tow you up the extremely steep approach road and onto your pitch).

The Nature Parks of Alvão and Peneda Gerês provide wonderful opportunities for exploration by car (and then perhaps on foot or by bike). From the campsite itself walkers and cyclists can follow several trails, some involving many ups and downs but one lengthy route along an abandoned railway line. Els and Herman will provide details of these, of routes further afield and of several car trips including one along the beautiful Douro valley. Days out could include the historic city of Guimarães whose old centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Braga with its thirty churches and, nearby, the pilgrimage church of Bom Jesus and two pre-historic villages.

Modern little toilet block tucked away behind a remnant of an old stone corn store; hot water to preset showers and open style washbasins. Washing machine. Rustic bar in former adega (wine-making cellar), opening onto an attractive terrace with amazing views. Set meals which Els provides twice or three times a week (all season, subject to demand). Delightful little swimming pool. Information about excursions. Contact site about dogs (max. 3 on site). WiFi in bar and on terrace (free).

Directions to Camping Quinta Valbom

Site is close to A7 motorway east of Guimarães. From west leave at exit 11 and join N206 for 13 km. east to Gandarela. Just before tunnel under motorway, turn right and immediately sharp right (Ribas). From east at exit 12 take N206 west for 8 km. and turn left and right after going under motorway. From here IGNORE SatNav: follow blue and red campsite signs. At white chapel turn left to cemetery. Caravans MUST stop here and phone site to be towed in. If no reply, phone mobile: 912 715 531 or 915 135 762. Others turn left towards Paço and take right fork. In 600 m. turn left (very steep climb - engage first gear), pass two houses, turn right then left to site on left up another steep slope.
