They are set out on two levels; the lower level nearer the river, with fewer static pitches, being some distance from the toilet facilities and sports area. The name of this site may be misleading – it is nowhere near Calais! Au Bois de Calais is located within the Parc Naturel Régional de Millevaches in the Limousin. This is a holiday centre comprising a campsite, chalets, gîtes and mobile homes. The 30 touring pitches are huge (minimum 100 sq.m), and all have water and electricity. On-site amenities include a bar and restaurant (with terrace) and a shop specialising in local produce. Sports amenities include a swimming pool and volleyball. There is also a small fishing pond, with the River Corrèze running along one side of the site.

Les Hameaux de Miel

Les Hameaux de Miel is a member of the Chalets en France group, which comprises six chalet parks in southern France. Please note, however, that there are no touring pitches here. The site is open all year and has a hilltop location with fine views of the surrounding valleys and forests of the Limousin. The Etang de Miel is three minutes walk away and has received the European blue flag accreditation for its cleanliness. The lake is ideal for sailing and windsurfing, as well as fishing, and also has accessible facilities. A children’s club operates during the peak season and various other activities are organised including archery, rock climbing and riding.

Mialaret is 4 km. from the village of Neuvic and only 6 km. from the Gorges of the Dordogne. It is set in a 44-hectare estate with a 19th-century château, now a hotel and restaurant offering gastronomic dishes. More simple meals are served at the brasserie/pizzeria. Most of the 113 touring pitches are set in a gently sloping parkland situation with numerous trees and shrubs. Some are level and separated by small bushes, most have some shade and 10A electricity. Each pitch has been provided with a wooden picnic table. A feature of the site is the 340 sq.m. pool designed by the Art Deco architect, Hector Guimard. Entertainment and activities are organised in high season.

The Corrèze is less well known than the Dordogne to the immediate south, but it is a beautiful area deserving more attention. Donzenac is an attractive small town with a variety of shops, restaurants, etc. This municipal site is situated on the outskirts, just under a mile from the centre (an uphill walk). The site is small and neat with 60 fairly large pitches on level grass, the majority with electricity (10A). A variety of trees and shrubs give some shade. The site is next door to the town tennis courts and swimming pool (open for July and August, and free to campers).

This slightly terraced campsite is located in a beautiful estate, dominated by the 16th-century château, on the banks of a very clean lake in this lesser known part of the Dordogne valley. The very friendly family ensures that everything is of a very high standard. Nearly all of the 250 grassy pitches are used for touring units. All have electricity (10A) and are separated by a variety of mature trees giving varying amounts of shade. Many of the trees have low branches making access to most pitches rather difficult for large motorhomes. Some pitches have an ideal position alongside the lake.

Limousin

This quiet and deeply rural province is right in the centre of France to the south of the tourist region of the Loire Valley. Unspoilt and thinly populated, it is unknown to many but by others is considered close to paradise.

On the western side of the Massif Central, this stunningly beautiful region of still lakes, fast flowing streams, gently rolling valleys and forested mountains has been one of the best kept secrets in France. Lush green meadows are grazed by the Limousin breed of cattle, numerous ancient villages and churches dot the landscape, as well as more imposing abbey churches and fortresses. The region’s moorland has made it popular with horse breeders and the Anglo-Arab horse originated from the famous studs of Pompadour.

The city of Limoges, synonymous with porcelain production, produced the finest painted enamelware of Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries and today remains the porcelain capital of France. Aubusson is renowned for its beautiful and intricate tapestries. But Limousin’s appeal is, more than anything, the freedom of the countryside and it has not yet been discovered except by the discerning traveller. A few miles west is the quiet, unassuming town of Aixe-Sur-Vienne, situated on a pilgrimage route and gateway to the National Park of the Périgord-Limousin, a natural haven laced with walking paths that lead around peat bogs, glassy lakes and limestone beds. Limousin’s castles, such as the Château de Crozant and Château de Boussac, are a reminder of a troubled past, now serving as an interesting way to explore the area’s history.

CUISINE OF THE REGION

Cuisine of the region

Traditional dishes include a variety of stews such as pote, cassoulet, beans and pork and sauced dishes accompanied by chestnuts or rye pancakes. Limousin beef is tender and full of flavour.

Bréjaude: A soup eaten with rye bread and so thick with cabbage and other vegetables that a spoon will stand up in it.

Clafoutis: A pancake batter poured, for example, over fruit.

Galette Corrzienne: Almond cake.
