Alan Rogers Review

Although the village of Ringøy is quiet and peaceful, it lies midway between two principal crossing points of Upper Hardangerfjord, the Kinsarvik ferry and the remarkable Hardanger suspension bridge, near the junction of two key routes. Extensive landscaping has produced a series of terraces running down from the road to the tree-lined fjord and the shore area where pitches have individual rock campfires. The owners, the Raunsgard family, are particularly proud of the site’s remarkable shore-side barbecue facilities. There is no reception, so on arrival you find a place and someone will call between 20.00 and 21.00.

There are several sites at the popular nearby resort town of Kinsarvik, but none compares for situation or atmosphere with the small, simple Ringøy site. Looking out to one of the world’s longest suspension bridges, with a 1380 m. span between towers that carry the deck 55 m. above sea level, you have a view of a man-made feature set in the mountainous fjord landscape. It was completed in 2013 and each end terminates inside a mountain tunnel.

The toilet block is small and simple (with metered showers), but well designed, constructed and maintained. It is possibly inadequate during peak holiday weeks in July. Rowing boat (free). Free WiFi over site.
