Alan Rogers Review

‘The island where time stands still’ is an apt description of Sark, one of the smallest inhabited Channel Islands, some 45 minutes from Guernsey by boat. Bicycles, horsedrawn carriages and tractors provide the only transport on the island. Situated five minutes from the shops and ten from the beach, the Pomme de Chien campsite is small with only 50 pitches, some of which are occupied by fully equipped tents to rent (May-September). The remainder are for campers with their own tents (no caravans, motorcaravans or trailer tents, of course). The pitches are large, on fairly level grass; there are no electricity hook-ups.

Visit with your own small tent or hire one of the site’s own (equipment includes everything you’re likely to need except bedding and a torch). On arrival by boat at the La Masseline Jetty, take the ‘toastrack’ tractor-bus up the hill, then follow the track with its flower-filled banks to the site. You can arrange to have your luggage transported by a local carter for a small fee. Call at the owners’ home to check in. Enjoy the total tranquillity of the island which has recently been recognised as the world’s first ‘Dark Sky Island’. All you are likely to need for a peaceful stay is provided, with several small shops, pubs, hotels, restaurants, a Tourist Office and even a bank.

Small sanitary block with free hot showers (bench and hook), toilets and washbasins. Fridge and freezer (free). Dishwashing sinks and washing line. Eggs for sale. Book swap. Dogs are not accepted. Torches are necessary. Baggage transfer on payment. No camp fires. Hire tents.

Take the small ferry from Guernsey (www.sarkshippingcompany.com). On arrival catch the tractor-drawn ‘bus’ up Harbour Hill (you can walk but it is a ten minute hike). Once at the top take road leading off left, then second right, and follow the lane to the site entrance. Reception is at house with white gates.
