Alan Rogers Review
This medium sized campsite beside a reservoir in central Portugal is operated by the local municipality as part of a larger leisure park, the Avis Nautical Club. From the entrance it is just a few steps to the lakeside pool, beach and restaurant. The site is built in terraces on a hill, with the upper levels occupied by apartments to rent and by numerous seasonal units. There are 70 marked pitches, but on the lower levels you find yourself a spot between the trees. The ground is uneven in places but there is plenty of shade and good views across the reservoir. There are plentiful 16A electrical connections.
The historic town of Avis with its castle and views over the surrounding countryside is within easy reach and offers shops, bars and restaurants as well as a considerable architectural heritage. Festivals, fairs and many exhibitions extend to cover the entire holiday season, starting in May when a mediaeval fair takes over the town. There are many walking, cycling and mountain-biking trails and the Maranhão dam is well worth a visit, as is the nearby megalithic compound. The six bridges across the reservoir are described as ideal spots for bird-watchers, though black kites are regularly seen soaring over the campsite.
Two traditional toilet blocks provide controllable showers, cold water to open-style washbasins. Units for disabled visitors in newer block with two pitches reserved for their use adjacent. Note: blocks are at either end of the middle terrace, so there is quite a climb from the lower levels. Motorhome service point (basic water tap). Bar and snack bar. Games and TV room. Bicycle hire. Apartments for hire. Direct beach access. WiFi in games room (free).
