Alan Rogers Review

A tranquil, beautifully located seashore park, it is no exaggeration to describe Mannix Point as a nature lovers’ paradise. Situated in one of the most spectacular parts of the Ring of Kerry, overlooking the bay and Valentia Island, the rustic seven-acre park commands splendid views in all directions. The park road meanders through the level site and offers 42 pitches of various sizes and shapes, many with shelter and seclusion and all with 10A electricity. A charming, old flower bedecked fisherman’s cottage has been converted to provide facilities including reception, excellent campers’ kitchen and a cosy sitting room with turf fire.

There is no television, but compensation comes in the form of a knowledgeable, hospitable owner who is a Bord Fáilte registered local tour guide. A keen gardener, Mortimer Moriarty laid out the site over 20 years ago and his intention to cause as little disruption to nature as possible has succeeded. The site opens directly onto marshland which teems with wildlife (a two-acre nature reserve) with direct access to the beach and seashore. This park retains a wonderful air of Irish charm aided by occasional impromptu musical evenings. A viewing platform allows observation of seals and birdlife and to consider the secrets of the park sculpture, ‘the pinicle’. This is also an ideal resting place for people walking the Kerry Way.
