Alan Rogers Review
This touring park is alongside the Breensford river, screened by trees but reaching the water’s edge. The park is discreetly located behind Ballykeeran’s main street. The top half of the site is in woodland, and after the reception and sanitary block, Lough Ree comes into view, and the remaining pitches run down to the shoreline. There are 60 pitches, most on hardstanding and all with 6A electricity. With fishing right on the doorstep, there are boats for hire locally, and the site has private mooring buoys, plus a dinghy slip and harbour. A restaurant and ‘singing’ pub are close.
The M6 motorway has made this park easily accessible from Galway or Dublin. Nearby attractions include the Kilbeggan Distillery Experience, but the main attraction is Lough Ree and the navigable Shannon river flowing into and out of the lough on its long voyage to the sea. There are pleasure cruises based in Athlone.
Facilities
The toilet block is clean, and the recently refurbished ladies’ toilets, unisex showers (€ 1) and facilities for disabled visitors are all excellent. Dishwashing sinks outside. Laundry room (wash and dry € 8). A wooden chalet houses a pool room with open fire and campers’ kitchen (no cooking facilities).
