This is a spacious site sitting high on a hillside and set in natural woodland. Royat is on the outskirts of Clermont-Ferrand, but close to the beautiful Auvergne countryside. There are 196 terraced pitches on part hardstanding with 132 available for touring units, 107 of which have 10A electricity (long leads may be needed). A further five pitches offer water and drainage. The pitches are informally arranged in groups, each of which is separated by natural trees and shrubs. The central lodge and reception area have been completely renovated. The bar and terrace overlooks the irregularly shaped swimming pool area and play areas. Although very peaceful off season, the site could be busy in July and August.

This site would be ideal for those who would like a taste of both the town and the countryside. Royat is a 20 minute walk, but a bus runs every 30 minutes in the mornings. Dotted with lakes and forests, the Auvergne has the greatest number of extinct volcanoes in Europe. The unique European Volcano theme park, Vulcania, is less than ten minutes away from the campsite and there are more than 500 Romanesque churches, nearly 50 châteaux on the Historical Road of the Châteaux of Auvergne, and many spa towns to visit, including Royat and its thermal water play centre – Royatonic.

Facilities

Five toilet blocks, some heated, have all the usual amenities but it could be a long walk from some pitches. Accessible facilities, Small shop (all season). Bar, restaurant and takeaway (July/Aug). Attractive heated swimming and paddling pools (30/4-18/9), sunbathing area. Tennis. Boules. Two grassy play areas. Organised entertainment in high season. Central lodge for coffee/board games/relaxation. Free WiFi in bar area. Only electric barbecues permitted. Torches advised. Max. 1 dog.

Location

From A75 exit 2 (Clermont-Ferrand) follow signs for Bordeaux on D2089. At second roundabout take exit signed Bordeaux and Ceyrat. Shortly after take exit right then turn right, signed Ceyrat. At traffic lights go straight across onto D944 (formerly D941C) signed Royat and Puy-de-Dôme. At top of hill turn left (D5) and site signed. Entrance 800 m.
