Alan Rogers Review

At the end of a very narrow no-through road is the Finchale Abbey (English Heritage). This adults only park is situated alongside it with the ruins forming a scenic backdrop. It offers 43 pitches, 34 of which are hardstanding, all with 10A electricity. There are also three large, fully serviced super pitches. Privately owned mobile homes are positioned on the upper level above the touring pitches. A tarmac road within the park allows for easy access to the pitches which are off to both sides. The River Wear runs along one side of the park.

The sanitary facilities are situated at one end, within a short walk from all pitches. A small shop on site sells essentials and a small café offers takeaway food. Security is good here with staff on duty 24 hours a day. Watching the wildlife is an activity in itself here with guinea foul parading around the park and birds of prey nesting among the ruins.

The single, heated toilet block includes facilities for disabled visitors. All facilities are modern and very clean. Motorcaravan services. Small shop for essentials. Small café with takeaway. River fishing (permits from shop). Swimming and canoeing in the river (guests to bring own equipment). Walks in the woods and along the river bank. WiFi in reception area.

From the A1 exit 63, turn onto the A167 for approximately 4 miles, turn left at the roundabout, towards Arnison Centre. Follow signs for Finchale Abbey from there. Please note some signs say Finchale Abbey and some say Finchale Priory (both are same).
