Alan Rogers Review
This campsite is temporarily closed for redevelopment.
If one follows Hardangerfjord on the map and considers the mighty glacier which once scooped away the land along its path, it is easy to imagine that it started life in Espelandsdalen. For generations farmers have struggled to make a living out of the narrow strip of land between water and rock. One of these farmers has converted a narrow, sloping field bisected by the road (572) into a modest lakeside campsite taking about 50 units. The grassy meadow pitches below the road run right down to the lake shore. There are 30 electrical hook-ups (10A). Campers come here for the fishing and walking, or just to marvel at the views of the valley and its towering mountain sides.
Espelandsdalen runs from Granvin to Ulvik, both of which lie at the heads of their respective arms of Hardangerfjord. A minor road (route 572) links the two small towns with sharp climbs at either end. The valley bed here is occupied by a series of connected lakes, popular with canoeists.
A newly refurbished sanitary block consists of a washing trough with hot water, a shower on payment and WCs. Confectionery, ice cream and drinks are kept in the office. Swimming, fishing and boating in lake. Pedalo hire. WiFi.
