The region of Meteora is named after the impressive rock formations which rise out to the plain of Thessaly and which now have ancient monasteries clinging to their summits. Camping Vrachos Kastraki is ideally placed to visit this unusual landscape, as it is situated in a valley surrounded by mountains and huge, natural sculptures.

There are around 300 pitches, many quite small and suitable only for tents. 16A Electricity is said to be available for all, but in some cases cables would have to cross the roads. Individual pitches are not marked and you may pitch where you like. There is plenty of shade from mature almonds, acacias and poplars.

There is a warm welcome on arrival, which immediately helps the visitor unwind after the journey through the mountain passes. The site owners can advise on the numerous places of interest to visit. For the adventurous visitor, rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing and mountain biking can be organised from the site.

Those less actively inclined can relax and enjoy the sunshine and the view from beside the pool. The restaurant, which is open all year, is very good value. The site also provides a covered barbecue area and excellent cooking facilities with three designated picnic areas.

Two modern sanitary blocks provide British style WCs and open washbasins. Laundry room. Cooking facilities with picnic areas. Shop. Bar, restaurant and snack bar. Outdoor swimming pool (seasonal). Play area.

Location

At Ioannina take E92 to Trikala in an easterly direction – steep, winding and very slow moving. At Kalambaka turn left towards Kastraki. In 1.5 km. campsite entrance is on left. Site is well signed along the route.
