Alan Rogers Review
Camping Smeraldo is a unique and simple site near the seaside town of Moneglia. It has been formed out of a cliff face and was once the site for railway workers. Touring pitches (25) and tent pitches (35) are provided on hard terraces overlooking the sea. Electricity (3A) and artificial shade are available. A number of two- and three-bedroom chalets are also available to rent. On-site amenities are limited; a basic shop and a café/restaurant. The restaurant and its terrace provide fine sea views which are extra special on moonlit evenings. The owners are very friendly and helpful and English is spoken.
Moneglia has recently been added to the list of ‘I borghi più belli d’Italia’ and has an idyllic setting at the eastern end of the Ligurian Riviera. There are small, sandy beaches here and a number of small bays accessible only by sea. The area is also renowned for some excellent rock climbing and for sub aqua diving (facilities are available in the village).
Fairly basic sanitary facilities. Washing machines. Basic shop. Bar/restaurant with snack bar. Chalets to rent. Dogs are not accepted in July/Aug. Barbecues allowed on pitches (with care, not electric). Torches necessary. WiFi on part of site (charged).

Site is between Genova and La Spezia. Note height restriction through site approach tunnel (sign says 3 m. but we managed with 3.2 m unit). However, when approaching from west on coast road there is a 3 m. restriction tunnel so be prepared to make short winding inland diversion. Site well signed from coast road in Moneglia (ignore tunnel sign instructing you to gain consent from Camping Smeraldo to enter).
