Alan Rogers Review
The town of Pierrefonds is dominated by an impressive château that will be instantly recognised by followers of the TV series Merlin. The campsite is on the edge of the town and aims to attract traditional campers as well as holiday-makers looking for something different in the way of accommodation. You are sure of a warm welcome from the very friendly manager. There are currently 59 pitches, including 5 occupied by seasonal or rental units. All have 10A electrical connections, water and drain. They are separated by well-trimmed hedges and are mainly level and of a good size, though a few are smaller and sloping.
The ‘habitations insolites’ (unexpected accommodation) to rent are currently two small vintage caravans, a ‘Canadienne’ – a little wooden lodge up among the trees with a tiny annexe for up to three children – and a ‘Hobbit’s House’ built into a grassy bank;. All are beautifully and imaginatively fitted out in appropriate styles, the most spacious being the Hobbit dwelling with an attractive lounge area, a fully equipped kitchen and two curtained bays with double beds on either side of the lovely shower room. Pierrefonds has shops, bars and restaurants, a post office, a lake with canoes and of course the château which is open to the public. Nearby Compiègne has a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants, a château and an impressive cathedral where an exhibition traces the events of World War 1. The armistice was signed in the nearby forest – note the campsite’s address.
Traditional building at entrance houses all facilities: separate toilet provision for men and ladies (well maintained and kept very clean) with controllable showers and some washbasins in cubicles. Washing machine. Reception from which drinks and ices are served on the little terrace and where bread and meal baskets can be ordered. Small play unit (3-8 yrs). Bicycle hire. Wifi around reception (free) Two small vintage caravans, a wooden cabin and a ‘Hobbit’s House’ for hire (other unusual units planned).
