Alan Rogers Review

Camping in the Forest is a partnership between the Forestry Commission and The Camping and Caravanning Club. This spacious site is in the heart of Snowdonia, set in a marvellous, natural, wooded environment on the slopes of Snowdon. The 204 slightly sloping pitches are naturally laid out in clearings in the woods. There are 100 for caravans and motorcaravans, and 104 for tents. The former are on hardstandings, well shaded and all have 10/16A electricity. The tent pitches are more open, in grassy glades, but only six have 6A electricity. Rock pegs are advised. No mobile phone signal.

There is abundant fauna and flora, tumbling streams and always something to watch from the cheeky squirrels to the smallest bird in Britain. Free maps of the forest walks are provided in reception and orienteering and fishing are possible. A bus service stops at the top of the entrance lane (two hourly for Caernarfon and Porthmadog). The small tourist steam train also runs between Caernarfon and Porthmadog and has a station next to the site. In Porthmadog there are connections to other train services.

Two modern, fully equipped toilet blocks have all necessary facilities, including those for babies and disabled campers. Clothes drying lockers (charged). Motorcaravan services. Well stocked shop. Well equipped adventure playground. Log cabin common room.
