Alan Rogers Review of Camping Gythion Bay
Gythion Bay is based in the southeast of Peloponnese, on the 5km long sandy beach of Mavrovouni. The real draw to this site is the immaculate beach, ideal for swimming and watersports. The area is well known for endangered sea turtles, where they choose to lay their eggs. This four-star campsite is ideal for the family to come on their camping holiday as it is a clean, relaxing campsite with a wide choice of facilities and activities for all ages.
On-site, there are 300 touring pitches set amongst olive, fig and orange trees, still giving you that sense that you are staying in a traditional Greek campsite. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to food; situated next to the swimming pool is the campsite's restaurant where the renovated kitchen offers a tempting menu with a variety of traditional Greek food and tasty snacks starting in the morning by serving breakfast and brunch with a wide variety of choices. There is also a cosy bar where you can enjoy local wine and beer on the beach or by the pool.
The beach is ideal for swimming, running, windsurfing, kitesurfing, yoga, tai chi, meditation, and long walks with your dog. In the afternoon, lovers of windsurfing and kite surfing start to wonder if the wind is strong enough to get on their board and sail away towards Crete with the west wind. The view is fantastic for those lying on the beach. Near the coast, the campsite offers windsurf storage and a cleaning station free of charge. You will also find a surf school 500m from the camp.
During the high season, there are several activities and entertainment programmes for kids. Children ages 2-12 can participate in treasure hunts, face painting, cooking, and environmental education classes. The younger campers get to feed the campsite's friendly donkeys and learn about the endangered sea turtles. Entertainment doesn't just stop at the kids; Adut evening entertainment is held during the summer months; this includes live shows, dances and karaoke, to name a few.
This is a good starting point for excursions to the Caves of Diros and a broader exploration of Lakonia, especially Inner, Outer Mani, and Sparta.
