Alan Rogers Review
With easy access from the nearby A9, Azur Waldcamping Auwaldsee lies along the northern banks of a small lake. There are 650 pitches, of which 350 are for touring units. These are level, grassed and have 16A electricity. Access roads (some overgrown when we visited) lead to large, open grass areas with unmarked pitches which are shaded in places by mature trees. Opposite reception is a traditional Bavarian restaurant with a large beer garden – a good place to try the Bavarian speciality wheat beer. With its location in the centre of Bavaria the site is a useful base to tour the region or as stopover point to those travelling further afield.
First documented in 806, Ingolstadt, with its old town and fortified walls, is certainly an interesting place to visit. It was the setting for Mary Shelly´s Frankenstein and for those with strong nerves a Frankenstein tour is offered. Bavaria is well known for its cuisine, none of which is suitable for those wishing to loose weight, however, more important to Bavaria is Beer and in Ingolstadt in 1516 the Bayerisches Reinheitsgebot for beer was proclaimed, the worlds first food purity regulation that stated that beer could only be produced from barley, hops and water. This is naturally celebrated on an annual basis.
