Dornafield

Newton Abbot, Devon, West Country

Alan Rogers Review

The entrance to Dornafield leads into the charming old courtyard of a 14th-century farmhouse giving a mellow feeling that is complemented by the warm welcome from the Dewhirst family. Having booked in, continue down the lane (with a tree covered bank alive with wild flowers) to the Buttermeadow, a tranquil valley providing 75 individual pitches on flat grass, separated by grassy ridges and in some places, wild rose hedges. You pass the walled orchard, secluded and cosy for tents. Or take the road up the hill to Blackrock Copse with large luxury pitches with all facilities including a chemical disposal point and cleverly concealed TV connections. Electricity points are 10A.

Facilities

Both modern toilet blocks are excellent and heated, with some washbasins in cubicles and comfortable roomy showers, but the new block up the hill could be said to be ‘state of the art’ with underfloor heating and a heat recovery system. Both blocks have facilities for disabled visitors and babies. Laundry rooms. Shop (13/3-2/1). Gas supplies. All-weather tennis court. 7 acres for dog walking. Games room. Play areas. WiFi. All year caravan storage. Half-mile walk to main road for bus stop.
